The Lively Ones
Hang Five!!! The Best of The Lively Ones Vol.1
Heads Up! The Best of The Lively Ones Vol.2
(Del-Fi)
While lacking the originality and aquatic
menace of Dick Dale, the Lively Ones were one
of the tightest and most exuberant of all
instrumental surf bands. Now known for the
end-credits appearance of their version of the
Ventures' "Spudnik" (retitled "Surf Rider") on
the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, the Lively Ones
were astonishingly prolific, releasing four
albums in 1963. Hang Five documents the
group's flair for rearrangements, including a
epic take of the theme to Exodus, the sleazy
surf-strip tune "The Caterpillar Crawl," and a Music Review Index
driving work-up of Dick Dale's "Surf Beat."
The Lively Ones could sound overly
professional--even with a noirish sax solo,
the group is too slick to pull off a convincing
cover of Link Wray's ‘50s fuzzfest "Rumble."
While Hang Five offers the stronger program,
the mere existence of a second, 23-track
collection testifies to the group’s sustained
inspiration. A meticulous transfer captures
every trace of vintage echo and twang.
